SAFETY FIRST!

Protect your eyes and ears. During operation the air exhaust from this pneumatic hammer is capable of throwing chips into your eyes. A lesser hazard is the possibility of the hammering action also ejecting small chips. Wear safety glasses! The hammering action of this tool is noisy, especially when used to close pittsburgh locks in sheet metal ductwork. The noise always, slowly damages your ears. The more you use this tool without ear protection, the more hearing damage you will have. Wear ear protection, ear plugs or ear muffs. You might damage your eyes without safety glasses but you will damage your hearing if you use this tool without hearing protection. Don't forget about your coworkers. Either isolate yourself from other workers when you use this tool, or protect them too.

CLOSING A PITTSBURGH LOCK

  1. Eye and ear protection!!!
  1. Connect hammer to an air source not over 100 psi.
  1. Set the power regulator at 1 turn open (screw shut, then open 1 turn).
  2. Apply the hammer to the pittsburgh lip as shown in Figure 1. Trigger the hammer briefly, check hammering action, and adjust the power regulator. Note: Start with lower power settings, this hammer has more power than you need for most pittsburgh locks.
  3. Move the hammer smoothly along the length of the pittsburgh lock. The result should be to hammer the lock lip over 45°.
  4. Reposition the hammer as in Figure 2 and make a second pass along the lock seam. This should close the lock seam.
  5. You may want to make a third pass along the seam to improve the appearance.
  6. You may fine tune the power setting to suit your metal gauge and speed of closure. A common problem is setting the power regulator too high. This will deform the pittsburgh lock and the corner of the duct work. Reduce the power regulator setting and slow down a bit.
  7. You may want to obtain a 10" long piece of 3/8" square bar. Use this and the pittsburgh hammer to "iron" the 1/4" duct lip into the pittsburgh pocket as shown in Figure 3. This is a clumsy operation at first but it gets easier with practice.
  8. If you remove the pittsburgh guide, 22, but leave the mushroom tool, 21 in the hammer, you can use the hammer to smooth out creases in sheet-metal. This works well to erase a wrongly placed bend in a piece of sheet-metal.1.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

  1. Use an air supply of 100 psi or less.
  2. Oil daily (air tool oil or 30w non-detergent motor oil.
  3. Keep hammer clean and dry.
  4. Do not operate the hammer without having the operating tool against the work. The mushroom head tool 21, and the 9 piece chisel set all have a .401" diameter impact shank. These tools are driven by the piston 15, directly striking the shank end. When installed in the hammer, these tools have about 1/2" movement within the hammer, as allowed by the retainer 17. When using either the pittsburgh hammer or the other tools always keep pressure against the face of the tool. This will keep the tool shank full depth in the hammer during use.
  5. After 1 months use, remove the mushroom chisel and inspect the shank, that is normally inside the hammer. It should have a 1/16" x 1/16" bevel on the end that receives the blow from the hammer's piston. If you allow the shank end to mushroom, you will have to use extreme force to remove the chisel. This shank end mushrooming will also interfere with the hammering action of the tool.
  6. With use, the hammer body 16, will loosen in the handle 1, and the hammer will stop hammering. Retighten the hammer body 16, into the handle 1 at the first sign of looseness, then readjust guide 22 for best position.

DEMOLITION

  1. Remove guide 22, and mushroom tool 21. You now have a standard heavy duty pneumatic hammer ready to accept a variety of tools.
  2. The 9 pc. chisel set contains a variety of punches and chisels designed to cut and punch sheetmetal. Remember to keep pressure on the tool when operating the hammer. Set the power regulator, 4, according to the thickness of metal you are working.
  3. For cutting concrete a round punch works best. You may want to regrind one of the longer chisels into a long, round punch. Set the power regulator 4, as needed.
  4. After breaking concrete, clean the hammer thoroughly. Concrete dust will cause the pneumatic hammer to wear out quickly.
  5. You may want to regrind one chisel into a wood chisel shape for cutting holes in timber.
